Benign Growth Excision

Skin growths are common and can appear at any stage of life. While many skin growths are non-cancerous, they can often become bothersome, uncomfortable, or cosmetically concerning. Understanding the different types of lesions and the available treatment options can help you make informed decisions about your care. We at Ocean Dermatology use cutting-edge surgical procedures to safely and efficiently remove benign growths, such as lipomas and cysts.

Moles (Nevi)

A common type of skin growth that often appear as small, dark brown spots and are caused by clusters of pigment-forming cells called melanocytes.

Skin Tags

Small, soft, noncancerous growths that form when the skin rubs against itself.

Seborrheic Keratoses

Waxy or scaly and slightly raised growths that are usually brown, black, or light tan. People tend to get more of them as they get older often on the face, neck, chest or back.

Cysts

A closed sac of tissue that can form anywhere in your body. Cysts look like pouches or pockets. They’re usually filled with fluid, pus, air or other materials.

Warts

Warts are growths caused by viral infections. They range in appearance based on the type.

  • Patients may choose to remove some lesions due to discomfort or for cosmetic reasons, especially when lesions are visible on the face or neck. Additionally, if a lesion changes in color, size, or shape we may recommend removal to allow for further evaluation.

  • The excision is performed under local anesthesia with the surgical area completely numbed. Dr. Yoo carefully cuts out the lesion, often with a small amount of surrounding tissue. The skin is then stitched with precision suturing to allow for optimal healing.

  • After the procedure, it is common to experience mild redness, crusting, soreness, or swelling. Healing times vary depending on the type of procedure, but most areas improve within a few days to a couple of weeks.
