Brown Spots

Brown spots, also known as age spots, sunspots, or liver spots, are common skin conditions that usually develop over time as a result of aging, sun exposure, or hormonal changes. Although these patches are typically benign, they can give the appearance of uneven or prematurely aged skin. In order to restore a more even, luminous, and young complexion, we at Ocean Dermatology specialize in cutting-edge pigment removal procedures.

Sun Exposure

Over time, ultraviolet (UV) rays stimulate the production of melanin in the skin, which can lead to the development of dark spots.

Aging

As you age, your skin’s ability to repair itself decreases, making brown spots more likely to form.

Genetics

Some individuals are more predisposed to developing brown spots due to their genetic makeup.

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy, birth control, or hormone replacement therapy can trigger hormonal fluctuations, leading to pigmentation changes.

  • Brown spots are typically harmless and are not a sign of skin cancer. However, because these areas of the skin are damaged, you could develop skin cancer. It’s important to monitor your spots and consult with us if you notice any changes in size, shape, or color.

  • Treatment can be uncomfortable; most patients say it feels like a little rubber band snapping. We will discuss pain management options during your consultation.

  • You can expect redness and swelling the day after your laser treatment, and within 4-7 days, these spots will begin to flake off. Brown spots will come back in the sun, so it is recommended to wear sunscreen and protective clothing, especially in the weeks after treatment.

  • Results vary depending on the treatment method and individual skin type. Many patients see improvements within a few weeks to a couple of months after treatment.
